The Twilight Hype

My husband and I started watching Twilight: New Moon last night.  We got through about half of it when he suddenly proclaimed, "Ugh, why are we staying up to watch this agonizingly slow movie?  There's no plot."  So we turned it off and decided to watch the rest another day.  (I mean we can't not finish the movie!  I'm one of those people that, once the movie is started, I can't stand to not see the end.  It will drive me crazy.  Even if the film is horrible, I still have to get to the end.  I just can't help myself.)

Now I'm not a Twilight Saga fan.  Not even close.  Maybe if I read the books I would feel a kinship to the characters, but as far as the movies go...I'm not really sure what the big deal is.  Team Edward: He looks like a dead guy and has the personality of a dead fish to match.  Team Jacob: Much cuter, mostly because he doesn't look like a dead guy, but still lacking in the personality department.  Oh and that Bella!  Talk about the worst decision maker ever!  Get a grip woman!

For me, the things that save the film are the location and the filming style.  The scenery shots are fantastic.  Most of the film is shot in Vancouver, which, in my opinion, is one of the most picturesque places in the world.  There's a scene where Bella and Edward are lying in a field filled with purple flowers.  Amazing!

As far as filming goes, their use of vibrant color teamed with washed out color produces outstanding results.  It's like someone turned up the blur tool in Photoshop and selectively chose certain images not to blur allowing them to pop.  The lighting makes each scene seem so surreal and magical.  So hats off to the director for that one!

I asked my hubby if he were able to choose, would he rather be a werewolf or a vampire.  After careful thought and analysis he replied, "I've always wanted to be a werewolf, but I think that I should answer vampire.  Vampires are portrayed better, you know, smarter, cooler, and sexier.  So I feel like I'm more of a vampire."

What?!?  Where did this man come from?  I want to have fifty of his babies, I swear.

Me: "What book should we read tonight, darling?"
Our child: "Hmmm...Mom, I really want to read Not the Hippopotamus, but I think that I should answer Harold and the Purple Crayon.  His expressive nature shown through the use of his purple crayon feels more like me.  Plus it's longer, so I won't have to go to bed right away."

I can't say that I will thoroughly enjoy the rest of the movie when I watch it tonight, but at least I can chuckle every time I see a werewolf or a vampire.

  1. Finished the movie last night. Not loving the weirded out Romeo and Juliet plot they have going on. After watching I kind of felt like I just lost 1.5 hours of my life and that there was no way to get it back. Sorry peeps. I guess I'll never be a Twilight groupie.

  2. Arielle, I would love to have a big block of land and have a garden like that purple flower field in Twilight, would you know the type of flower or flowers which would be suitable. I'm not sure if I am much of a fan of Twilight but the scenery is indeed illustrious.

  3. Hi Anonymous,
This is what I could dig up about the scene. Seems like no one knows for sure which flowers were used, but these are their best guesses. Good luck and happy gardening!
